Fern is another superearth orbiting Karat, and has a striking similarity to Frost with its large size and thick atmosphere. However, unlike Frost, Fern is thought to have once been a proper mini-neptune or even gas giant, before Karat’s death blasted most of its atmosphere away. It too mgirated inwards over a very long time.
Despite still not even being half an astronomical unit away from Karat, it is incredibly cold, receiving barely any light from the dim star. Most of the heat here is generated by tidal interactions between Fern and its moons.

"Fern" as in, the german word for "distant", NOT the plant. Nah and Fern have matching names, because Fern was originally intended to be the final planet of Karat. However, after finishing it, I decided it wasn’t desolate enough yet, so I added Nimky.
This planet originally hails from a planet pack I released under the name "Planet 9", that was entirely procedurally generated. However, it barely saw any attention, and the forum post now lies long dead and forgotten. Of note though is that despite the fact that I advertised said pack as being uniquely procedurally generated for every player, I sneakily set Planet 9 to always generate the same (all the other celestial bodies were still random), as I really enjoyed how it looked, and this is the version of the planet that found its way here.
